Thesis and diploma project

Last modified: 07. October 2025

Thesis

The BSc course concludes by defending the Thesis. The topic of the thesis is opional, consisting essentially of an research, analysis, evaluation and proposal on a municipal problem of the student's choice. The thesis is the first and most important independent work of the students, which is a testimony of the knowledge acquired during the course, a demonstration of their thinking and creativity. The thesis will be supported throughout the three semesters, with consultation and joint presentations to ensure that the best and most professional work is produced.

There are basically two types of thesis. Research thesis or analysis thesis, which have different topics. While a research thesis covers an urbanistic topic and analyses it through case studies, while creating and developing a methodology, an analysis thesis progresses from a pre-planning study to the problem mapping phase.

Thesis topics can be chosen by the student according to the research topics of our lecturers.

Diploma project

The MSc in Urban Planning and Design concludes with the defence of the Diploma project. As a general principle, the diploma project should be an individual, independent work. This means a specific synthesis of information not previously used in the solution of a planning task, and the presentation of new results. The aim is that the submitted material should convincingly demonstrate the student's knowledge of the chosen major structural unit, including the design area to be worked on in detail. In the light of this, the student will be able to formulate a conceptual response and a vision for the area in question that will create value. On the basis of this vision, the next step is to draw up a comprehensive development concept. This will be the basis for the zoning programme, with drawings and data. The planning work includes the environmental design plan together with the sectoral work (building plan, transport, green infrastructure). The environmental design plan is complemented by detailed plans, architectural solutions and the preparation of a model. The drawing work is framed by a complex description of the work.
