Introduction
Last modified: 27. October 2022
The Department of Garden and Open Space Design is one of the responsible departments for the Garden Design specialisation in the Landscape Management and Garden Construction Engineering programme, and one of the responsible departments for Garden and Open Space Design in the Master of Landscape Architecture programme, and is the coordinator of the MA/MLA programme.
The department's theoretical and practical education provides knowledge and develops design skills in the design of the human environment, with special emphasis on the architectural, ecological and economical aspects of urban areas. The design of open spaces of various types and scales in municipalities, including garden, open space design and green space planning, is a creative action, an architectural activity which makes a positive contribution to the shaping and development of our immediate and wider environment, to the protection of its cultural values, to the improvement of the ecological conditions of municipalities and to the quality of the environment in general.
A broad spectrum of urban open spaces is covered by the topics and subject groups taught: urban spaces, pedestrian zones, institutional gardens, community and private residential gardens. All scales and stages of design education are covered in the design of open spaces, from conceptualisation to detailed design. In addition to our landscape architect colleagues, we also have colleagues from the fields of architecture and horticulture, guaranteeing an integrated approach to architecture and urban design, as well as the education of the contemporary use of ornamental plants, coordinated by a dedicated dendrology team in the department.
