Specializations
THE URBAN MANAGEMENT SPECIALISATION is a specialization of the MATE Institute of Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Ornamental Horticulture, specializing in urban planning, urbanism, architecture and green infrastructure in municipalities.
Building on the strong "green approach" of the first years of the BSc, the Urban Management Specialisation focuses on the built world, architecture, urbanism, urban planning. The subjects taught in the specialization cover mainly urban context, architecture, culture and design, green space and landscape, complemented by fundamental and technical knowledge.
The highest credit value courses in the specialization are in the field of urban context, in addition to the courses on spatial and settlement studies, settlement administration and management, the courses on thesis preparation also cover the urban context, with many creative works and practical exercises.
Architecture, design and culture includes subjects related to architecture and its co-disciplines. The aim of the architecture classes is to learn about the basic practical issues of architectural design and urban composition, and therefore the semester will include both the transfer of basic design skills through small exercises modelling basic design situations, and the solution of a complex urban design problem.
Knowledge of the past is essential for understanding the built environment. The lessons in architectural history and urban heritage provide students with a solid basis for a knowledge of architecture - urban architecture - in historical periods.
To demonstrate the creativity in students, it is necessary to continuously develop drawing skills and representation techniques, therefore, in addition to two semesters of additional drawing classes linked to the specialisation, other creative classes also place a strong emphasis on the development of visual expression.
The built and natural environment are strongly interrelated, so landscape and green space knowledge will remain an important part of the curriculum during the semesters of the specialization, while the knowledge acquired in previous semesters will be extended,, mainly at the municipal level. In addition to green space management, which is taught in all specializations, students in the URBAN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIZATION will also become familiar with the tools and methods of green space maintenance and the operation of public spaces at the municipal level, which will be a significant advantage when they start working.
The semesters will be complemented by workshop weeks to gain further knowledge of the world of municipalities. During the workshops, the emphasis is on team-building, with students usually working in groups on a research and design project on a specific topic.
During the Pop-Art workshops, students usually enrich and transform the various locations of the Buda Campus with various installations, or develop an urban themed board game.
The tasks and themes of some subjects are interlinked and build on each other, so that students can work on the same exciting project task in several subjects over the course of two semesters.
The primary - and in most cases automatic - continuation of the Urban Management Specialisation is the MSc in Urban Planning and Design, where students will gain further up-to-date theoretical and practical expertise, become familiar with contemporary urban theory and practice, and acquire a thorough knowledge of the foundations of the broad disciplines of architecture, engineering, ecology, environmental science, sociology, economics, law and public administration.
Upon completion of the MSc in Urban Planning and Design, a Diploma and a license in Urban planning can be obtained.
